Cruch time again! "Ooh, mother!" as George Formby would say. Rose Forgrove A took on the mighty heavyweights, and most peoples favourites to win the league this year, Leeds CCCCCCCC. The formidable opposition included an International Master on top board, an ex-Irish international on two and a FIDE master on three! An average grading of just 194. Fortunately, for Forgrove back in the fold were the mighty Chipanga and the devastatingly handsome and debonair Archer. After enforced absences from the previous dire Pudsey draw, Forgrove were looking to man up big time.

First to finish were Colm "Sponsored by Red Bull" Barry vs Rich "Sponsored by Leeds Brewery" Archer contesting board two. A nice dull Philidor's defence appeared, pieces got swapped off sharpish which quickly left an ending with double rook, knight to me, and double rook and bishop to Colm. In totally uncharacteristic fashion I offered a draw, which Colm took. He subsequently told me that my position was substantially better. Although Colm was clearly out of order and should have informed me of this before I blurted out my draw offer, I was happy with a solid half point against such a dangerous opponent.

When I left at 22:00 hrs the other four games were still in play. (I had to catch the bus home or wait for the last one at 23:10 and as much as I am committed to chess this was never going to happen) As I left it looked like Roger the Dodger was going to beat the ever-tricky Mark Bikin, after repelling a violent Birkin attack. However, Roger then tried to win a piece, but I believe this gave Mark his opportunity and he was able to force a perpetual.

Leeds CCCC A 1 - 1 Rose Forgrove A

When our first team is due to face some seriously tough opposition I find it my duty to make sure that our boys are fully up for the match. With this in mind, I pulled out a masterstroke a few days before this clash and told captain Clive (in my typical subtle style) that he might be better served finding a different hobby than chess to fill his time or, failing this, perhaps find refuge in the second team. The Davies Dervish was suitably enraged and young Deighton felt the full force on board five. Clive battled his way to being the rook and a pawn for a bishop exchange up. With this advantage Captain Fantastic made no mistake and duly converted the full point. A cracking performance.

Leeds CCCC A 1 - 2 Rose Forgrove A

To be honest, I didn't see much of Mike vs Hubert on board three - the rooms quite dark, or it appeared so after further alcohol consumption. Apparently Mike sacked a pawn early for some great counter play and when I left he'd got his pawn back with a very imbalanced position. All of which was enough to unsettle Hubert and Mike cashed in on some mistakes from his opponent to win the match. A 'Round' of applause for Mike's performance against such a difficult customer.

Leeds CCCC A 1 - 3 Rose Forgrove A

This left just the top board to play out the dead rubber, so to speak. Taka vs Richard was another of their mental encounters. Taka offered a draw when both players had a rook en-prise! Not to be upstaged, Richard took sometime to decline the offer and then sacked a whole rook for a pawn!(though I guess he'd probably call it a blunder in hind sight). Still, he must have got a fai bit of counter play as Richard managed to wriggle out by claiming a draw due to the position being repeated three times, leaving a somewhat frustrated Taka.

Final score: Leeds CCCC A 1.5 - 3.5 Rose Forgrove A

A great result for the boys from Forgrove - Copperworks A with black at home next.....
