At the 2012 Blackpool Congress our club had a duo of strong performances in this highly competitive event on the weekend chess circuit. In the Major section Roger Jennings (picture left) shared first place with an impressive total of 4 out of 5 points, continuing his strong showing in local congresses. Also, Mike Round just missed out on joining Roger with a meritable score of 3.5 out of 5 points. He did grab one of the grading prizes though.
Congratulations to Rose Forgrove club member Andy Ross (pictured left) who finished as joint winner of this years' Doncaster Congress Intermediate section. After taking a first round bye, Andy blasted his way through the field winning every game to end on 4.5/5. A great performance. Also, in the Open section Roger 'the dodger' Jennings and Mike 'it's my' Round both posted meritable scores of 3.5/5. Roger's victims included Peter Shaw and Jos Wooley whilst Mike took down the dangerous Bob Newton.
Many of our club members have been busy during the summer and autumn months. Not content with waiting for the LCA and YCA league seasons to start, they have been targeting various congresses in the meantime. Their efforts have yielded a fair amount of success along the way.
Several Rose Forgrove club members descended on the 25th York Congress over the weekend of 6th January 2012. Overall, there were some good performances keeping up our clubs' strong showing at local congresses. In the Open section Mike Round (pictured) managed a fine 3.5/5 points finishing joint 4th overall, including a cracking victory over Jim Burnett. Mark White recovered, after starting with a loss, to post a tally of 3/5 points incorporating a victory over fellow Forgrove player Roger Jennings who ended with 2/5. In the Intermediate section Ian Thackray ended on 2/5 points. A good effort by all!
Reigning club champion Andy Bagley (pictured left) continued his good form at the recent Whitby Chess Congress. Andy scored an impressive 4 out of 5 points in the major section to finish joint first. Congratulations Andy! This continues the good run of results by Rose Forgrove players at various regional congresses.
Well done to Leeds RF chess club member Andy Ross who came a very creditable joint second in the minor section of the South Lakes congress. Andy finished on a score of 4 out of 5 points. This continues his good form in congress chess, carried over from his Bolton exploits where he also finished second. That first prize will soon be gained by Andy!
