Meet The Reporters

Kermit reportsAt Last! The 2012-13 chess league season is under way. Some of you will be leaping around with excitement, some of you will be well prepared. Whilst others may just use it as another excuse to have a boozy evening out. Anyway, a sure sign that the chess season is upon us is the drawing in of the dark nights and the much colder weather hitting us. Saturday's Yorkshire leagues and Wednesday's evening leagues got under way across the district. On the right are all the reports for our top teams in both the LCA and YCA leagues. Bringing you the very latest match reports are our intrepid reporters. They will be posting their work regularly during the chess season, so it would only be fitting to introduce them to you...

YCA Match of the Season
A fightIn the Yorkshire league the result of the season for our club was undoubtedly Rose Forgrove A's victory over the powerful Sheffield A team. However, in terms of the best match, well this was when Rose Forgrove A met Calderdale A. The Rose Forgrove A team were looking to end 2011 on a high with a win. They were to face Calderdale A in the latest instalment of the Yorkshire chess league. In past seasons this has never been an easy match for our Leeds boys and this years event did nothing to change that outlook. However, the Rose Forgrove A team are nothing if not resilient. A Forgrove fighting special was in order!

LCA Match of the Season
Lion roarWithout doubt the match and performance of the season for Rose Forgrove Chess Club was when our first team came up against the might of Leeds CCCC 1. In the fourth week of the Leeds league, Rose Forgrove 1 made a trip into town to face new boys Leeds City Centre Chess Club. Our second team had already faced some highly-rated players in their meeting with Leeds CCCC, and so it was that the first team were to be welcomed by some seriously tough opposition, including an International Master! Would Clive and his co-horts be savaged at the Old Red Lion? Could Rose Forgrove tame the Leeds city centre boys?

Beat The Webmaster

RF Webmaster v ?With the Leeds chess league drawing to an exciting conclusion the title and relegation battles are still unclear. So, for every week of the remaining LCA league fixtures Rose Forgrove's very own webmaster will issue out a challenge to a great luminary of the Leeds Chess scene. The challenge will consist of a head-to-head prediction contest where the result of each LCA division 1 league match shall be the focus of the challenge. The predictions will consist of both the individual match results and specific scorelines. Having been prepared to put their reputations on the line, which guest predictor will prove to be the best?.....

Horror at The Halfway House Battle of Leeds
Hammer House of HorrorAnother crunch match for the Rose Forgrove 1 team as they travelled to the Halfway House pub to face the might of Pudsey A. Possibly the biggest test for our boys so far turned out to be something of a landslide for one of the two teams. The evening manifested itself into a real Halfway House of Horrors for the losers! But who would that be? Rose Forgrove 1 or Pudsey A?

A nail-biterIt was that time of year again! The unofficial "War on the Boards" battle between the two top Leeds based teams in the Yorkshire chess league first division. As always, it was a bit of a nail-biter! Rose Forgrove A were led this time by the self-confessed popular genius Rich Archer. Was the team in safe hands? Could Archer hit the bullseye on his captaincy debut?

The Blue Peter Badge Match County Chess
Blue Peter badgeOur Rose Forgrove 2 boys took a trip down to the North Leeds Working Men's Club to face a determined Leeds A side. We were up against a team who were desperate to put some distance between themselves and the lower placed sides. This match called for some real invention not only during the match but also before it as we all could have done with bringing a scoresheet that we "had prepared earlier". Unfortunately, none of us earned a Blue Peter badge for our hastily created makeshift ones!

County chessThe county chess preliminary matches got under way for our Yorkshire sides recently. Beginning with the NCCU contests there were some interesting battles that raged in the north of England. The Yorkshire under 160 team had two away games; the first was a trip up to face Cumbria; the second a trip to face old rival Lancashire.
