The LCA and YCA Silverware

Throughout the season teams and individuals in both the Leeds and Yorkshire chess leagues will be battling it out over the many months for the various pieces of silverware on offer. These presitigious emblems have been won by many great local teams and players and it is certainly a distinction to have your name or your teams' name emblazoned on the trophy. Below are descriptions and photographs of the trophies which will hopefully act as a reminder of why we turn up on many a wind-swept, rain-soaked evening or snow-blizzard packed Saturdays! |
Leeds Chess Association

Leeds Division One Trophy
This is played on Wednesday evenings and runs throughout the season. All the teams involved field a 5 man team. The time control for this event is standard play of 75 mins for 35 moves, and then a further 15 mins are added in which to finish the game. |

Leeds Division Two Trophy
This competition is played on Wednesday evenings and runs throughout the season. All the teams involved field a 5 man team. The time control for this event is standard play of 75 mins for 35 moves, and then a further 15 mins are added in which to finish the game. |

Leeds Arjay Trophy
This is a knock-out competition played at various intervals in the season. Each team involved is comprised of 3 players. The overall match score counts and in the case of a draw, board count is used to decide the result. The competition preliminary round winners contest this trophy. The time control for this event is standard play of 75 mins for 35 moves, and then a further 15 mins are added in which to finish the game. |

Leeds Mini League Trophy
This is a league-based competition played at various intervals in the season. Each team is comprised of 3 players. The matches are played under a hanicapping system which is based on the combined grades of players in each team. The time control for this event is standard play of 75 mins for 35 moves, and then a further 15 mins are added in which to finish the game. |

Leeds Rapidplay Trophy
This is a fairly recent addition to the LCA calendar being established in 2007 and is a league-based competition. Each team is comprised of 3 players. Each player plays two games (one with white and one with the black pieces). The overall team score is then calculated. The time control for this event is rapid play of 30 mins for all moves. |

The Norman Ellis Trophy
This is an individual competition open to players with a YCA grade of 125 or over. Played on various Wednesdays thoughout the season. The time control for this event is standard play of 75 mins for 35 moves, and then a further 15 mins are added in which to finish the game.
The Kenneth Appleby Trophy
This is an individual competition open to players with a YCA grade of 125 or under. Played on various Wednesdays thoughout the season. The time control for this event is standard play of 75 mins for 35 moves, and then a further 15 mins are added in which to finish the game. |

The Gambit Trophy
This a trophy awarded to the player in the LCA league with the overall best performance in the year. The award is worked out on the basis of the individual player scoring the highest number of game points overall in all the competitions played under the standard play time controls. In the event of a tie, the player possessing the highest score from the least number of games will be deemed the winner. |
Yorkshire Chess Association
The Woodhouse Trophy
The major trophy of the YCA chess league. It is awarded to the champions of division one. The league comprises teams of 8 players with the overall team score denoting a win, draw or loss. The time control for this competition is standard play of 105 mins for 42 moves, and then a further 15 mins are added in which to finish the game.
The I.M. Brown Shield
This YCA chess league trophy is awarded to the champions of division two. The league comprises teams of 8 players with the overall team score denoting a win, draw or loss. The time control for this competition is standard play of 105 mins for 42 moves, and then a further 15 mins are added in which to finish the game.
The Silver Rook Trophy
This YCA chess league trophy is awarded to the champions of division three. The league comprises teams of 8 players with the overall team score denoting a win, draw or loss. The time control for this competition is standard play of 105 mins for 42 moves, and then a further 15 mins are added in which to finish the game. |
